Vision picking helps GlobalFoundries make semiconductors for the world
Demand for semiconductors is high. Supply chains depend on fast, reliable delivery of new chips. GlobalFoundries supports both. The manufacturing company makes high-quality semiconductors and works hard to deliver logistically.
GlobalFoundries needed to improve the picking process in its Dresden-based warehouse. It was mostly analog and paper-based, and it lacked efficiency and error correction.
Its old process used big handheld scanners and paper printouts of orders. These were sorted manually. When the employees reached the shelf, they put down the scanner to pick items with both hands. They picked up the scanner again to scan the code. Then, they finished their order and threw away the printout.
This process was inefficient, using a lot of paper and labor hours. It was also prone to errors. The scanner was cumbersome to handle, meaning operators sometimes forgot it. Vision picking was the obvious solution.
After implementing vision picking GlobalFoundries received much positive feedback from its staff. Working conditions had improved for them, and they could reduce the time spent searching, sorting, and prioritizing. Thanks to the hands-free, voice-controlled nature of vision picking on smart glasses.
In a warehouse, every move counts. People are constantly handling heavy, bulky items. Among other things, smart glasses reduce manual handling. Information appears directly in the worker's line of sight rather than on a clipboard that has to be constantly picked up and reviewed.
Switching to an AR-powered process is also good for the environment. You use a lot less paper.
By introducing vision picking with TeamViewer Frontline Pick, GlobalFoundries eliminated about 100,000 printouts annually and saved 25% of picking time after only one month.
We are very happy with the implemented solution, leveraging the power of augmented reality and virtual picking. We have really seen the benefits in our operations through efficiency and accuracy.
✔ GlobalFoundries reduced picking time by 25%
✔ Inventory accuracy increased by one third
✔ About 100,000 sheets of printed paper per year were saved
✔ Workers now spend less time searching, sorting, and prioritizing
✔ Demands for workers' rights, data protection, and occupational health and safety are fully met
